As it is well known, Vietnamese coffee is between one of the best coffees in the world. Their quality coffee is exported throughout the globe, and they also have the Weasel coffee which is similar to the Kopi Luwak coffee said to be the most expensive coffee in the world.
Although only locally you can taste the different preparations of traditional coffee drinks. They have so many different coffee drinks you will see many posts about coffee around here, also cause I am definitely a coffee lover.
If you are planning on coming to Vietnam make sure you try the vietnamese coffee named Bac Xiu. It is a very traditional kind of coffee prepared with condensed milk. Vietnamese coffee carries a chocolatly flavor, it is a little thicker then most coffees and lower acidity. When prepared with the condensed milk it becomes very sweet, tasty and even more creamy. During summer the drink is served with ice.
The history behind this flavory coffee drink goes back to the fifties when Saigon was facing a milk crises and the prices of fresh milk became too expensive for workers to afford.
Many Chinese were running coffee/breakfast places in that time and they came up with this idea to lower the price of the coffee served by using condensed milk which lasts much longer and it is high energy so workers would have something a little heavier to start the working day. This way chinese found a way to attract consumers and raise the coffee consumption.
This coffee can be found pretty much any where in Vietnam, but if you are in Hanoi here are some places to get it:
